Construction Update 10/29/10

Last weekend in Green Bay was very rainy and the first half of the week was very windy, the weather caused some issues for the overall construction effort.  The team estimates they lost about a days worth of work, despite that many advancements were made.  Here are the details.

The structure for turn 1 and turn 3 is now complete.

From Zippin Pippin Construction
Turn 1 is hidden inside of the structure for turn 3, if you look closely you can see the drop after turn 3 is just starting to take shape, later we'll see the beginnings of the lift hill. Turn 1 and turn 3 share the same structure, the lift hill and the first drop after turn 3 also share the same structure. In the picture below the lift hill uses the left half of the structure.

Just behind me when this picture was taken sits the lift motor, gearbox, and sprockets that will power the lift chain which were added this week. These are used components but they appear to be in like new condition.

Just to the north of this location the deck is being added to the loading framework that was added last week.

Standing at the future loading platform and looking up at the most recently completed structure put the camera lens right into the noon day sun and also shows the beginning of the drop after turn 3.

Turning to the East and looking back at the brake run we see the first layer of the track boards are being added to the structure in many locations.

Turning back around we can see the start of the ride, a short downhill to carry us around turn 1 and into the lift hill.

A quick walk over to the bottom of the first drop and looking in both directions shows the first layer of track being added on these hills. Several other layers of these boards will be added and capped with a steel plate for the trains to run on.

The foundation work for turn 2 is waiting for the first structure to be added to it. Just looking at the foundation you can see there is a lot going on in this area, the structure for turn 2 along with intersecting structure for the final break run which will go right through this structure is here along with the structure that will carry the trains to the out and back portion of the ride.

This week we also see the first foundation work extending into zone 3, the out and back portion of the roller coaster, the foundation shown below will support the train returning from the out and back and entering the final brake run.

The earth moving is getting even more intense at the furthest reaches of zone 3, they were busy excavating and backfilling in preparation for footings to continue out to the furthest reach of the ride.

In addition to the lift motor showing up on site one of the trolleys that will support the track in the transfer area was also spotted being prepped on site. Note the v-shaped rollers that will engage the structural elements we saw in the transfer area last week.

Even though a day was lost to weather this week overall the construction teams feel they are ahead of pace at this point of the construction. It appears they worked ahead on constructing bents to put into place when the weather slowed the progress of erecting the structure, this week there was by far the most bents waiting to be put into place that I have seen during my visits.

The structure of turn 1 and 3 is very impressive to view, here is a close up standing at the inside of these turns looking outward to the East.

That completes the tour of the site for this week, as always click on any of the images above to go to the photo album and see the pictures in a higher resolution.  Be sure to check back next week for the latest progress.

Construction Update 10/22/10

The Zippin Pippin roller coaster structure now includes some turns!

The structure for turn 1 and turn 3 is about 75% complete as of today.  The roller coaster structure is even more impressive now and really makes a statement at Bay Beach.  It was a beautiful fall day today but this weekend it's going to turn cold and wet; hopefully that won't slow the crews down too much next week.  Let's get to the pictures of all of the new additions since last week.

The big addition this week is the structure to support turn 1 and turn 3.  Turn 1 is at the start of the ride, it carries you around a 180° turn and into the lift hill. Turn 1 runs right through the structure of turn 3 which is nearly directly above it.  Turn 3 is an elevated turn that comes right after the uphill after the first drop, it is another 180° turn that ends with another drop that then takes you to the out and back part of the roller coaster.  Enough words here is what it all looks like.

The overall turn structure looks like this.  The upper portion is turn 3 and if you look near the bottom you can see the opening in the structure for turn 1.

If you look closely near the start of turn 1 you can see the slight downhill that gives the train enough momentum to get around turn 1 and into the chain lift.

This next shot is standing right where the center of the track would be very near the front car as the roller coaster is about to start it's circuit.

The structure for the loading platform is also taking shape, these cantilevered beams will support the loading platform. I believe sections of track for moving trains on and off the track will be stored under the cantilevered platform and be able to roll into the main line of the track for adding and removing trains.

There are still several bents laying around the turn 3 area to help complete the turn. I would expect turn 3 to be complete by next week, assuming the weather doesn't slow things down too much.

This next shot is standing outside of turn 3 looking towards the West, what an awesome structure!

This picture is taken outside of the transfer/loading platform area looking south. This opening in the structure will be used to get trains into and out of the ride; this is required because these sections are inside of the main structure of the ride.

These "V" shaped steel pieces will allow "V" shaped rollers to shuttle sections of track into the roller coaster circuit and out of it. This will allow trains to be added or removed from the track.

I couldn't resist leaning into the bottom of the first drop and getting another image looking up the first hill and up the uphill leading into turn 3.

All of the footings are now in place for turn 2, this is an elevated turn right after the lift hill before the first drop.

All of the standing structure is visible in this view taken looking East.

This familiar view looking down the brake run heading into the transfer station is now enhanced with the addition of turn 3 in the background.

Earth moving continues out in Zone 3, no actual footings or forms are in place yet but they are starting to mark some areas and some rebar has been moved to the extreme end of the out and back.

This next picture gives you an idea of the amount of bank near the end of turn 3, one would have to assume the train will be picking up some good speed in this area!

The break between the footings in this area will be the entrance and exit to the roller coaster queue.

These concrete pads are the foundation for the backup generator and the lift motor.

This section of the blueprint shows the areas above.

I noticed a curved section of a ratchet bar I hadn't seen on site before. This should be the last section of ratchet bar right at the top of the lift hill, where this section ends should also be the bent many of the people of Green Bay signed a few weeks ago.

Of course I had to take one last picture of the standing structure before leaving the site, that's all for this week, be sure to check back again next week for more news.

Zippin Pippin in the Memphis News

Check out this article from Memphis showing Dan Lardinois from the city of Green Bay cutting a section of the original Zippin Pippin track to bring to Green Bay.  None of the original parts will be used in the new version of the Zippin Pippin roller coaster; however, many of the parts, including the original trains, will be coming to Green Bay and will hopefully be displayed near the new version of the Zippin Pippin.

The line at the end of the article is really great.  Apparently Mayor Schmitt has offered free rides on the new Zippin Pippin Roller Coaster to any Memphis residents who travel to Green Bay.

I'll be visiting the construction site again this Friday so check for the latest information on the construction this weekend.

Construction Update 10/15/10

I'm a little late getting this post written, I did visit the site Friday (10/15) but then was in Madison all weekend for the Badger upset of Ohio State.  Here is the latest at the Green Bay Zippin Pippin Roller Coaster construction site...

To help orient ourselves I was able to find the part of the plan that identified the various construction zones.  Zone 1 consists of the brake run, load/unload area, the lift hill, and the portion of the track heading to the out and back.  Zone 2 consists of turn 2 (an elevated turn after the lift hill), the first drop, turn 1, and turn 3.  Click on the picture to see it in full resolution.

The main part of the structure that has been added since last week is the first uphill after the first drop right before turn 3 (another elevated turn).  The progress looks like this...

From Zippin Pippin Construction

Note the large hole in the structure, this area is so the cars can be moved in and out of the transfer area.  Several of the bents that will be used for the structure of turn 3 are assembled and laying near the footings for this turn.

There is also some new structure going up in the transfer area.  If you look closely near the lower center of this picture you can see how the structure is dropping, this is the area right after the loading/unloading are heading into turn #1.  This very small first hill will give the train enough momentum to get through turn #1 and into the chain lift on the lift hill.

From Zippin Pippin Construction
The footings for turn #2 were started this week, turn #2 is after the lift hill and just before the first drop.

From Zippin Pippin Construction

The footings shown in this picture will support two sections of track, the lift hill and the straightaway after turn 3 heading to the out and back portion of the roller coaster.

From Zippin Pippin Construction

Some work has also started in zone 3, there is some serious excavating going on at the far end of the out and back portion of the roller coaster track.

The standing structure looks like this from zone 3, this is looking east.

That wraps up this weeks visit, I'm hoping by next week we start to see some of the structure for turns 1 and 3 taking shape.
